Designing for Athens: What Global Agencies Miss

Greek consumers interact with digital products differently. After 12 years of working in this market, here's what we've learned.

A Market Often Overlooked

Most global design research focuses on US, UK, or East Asian markets. Greece is a small market but it punches above its weight in digital adoption. Smartphone penetration is above 80%, Instagram engagement rates are among Europe's highest, and Greek consumers are surprisingly quick to adopt new platforms.

Trust Signals Are Different Here

In many Northern European markets, a clean, minimal interface signals quality. In Greece, that same interface can read as unfinished or suspicious. Greek users expect density. They want to see reviews, social proof, logos of known brands, and contact information prominently displayed.

We've run A/B tests on this. Adding a visible phone number and address to a landing page increased conversion by 28% for one of our clients, even though almost no one called that number.
